EMAILING YOUR PHOTOS

The Problem:

You've just scanned your photo, or just downloaded from your camera.  It's perfect!  Now you want to email the photo of little Johnny to his grandparents.  You create a new email, put in the email address, attach the file using the 'paperclip' icon, and hit SEND.    Fifteen minutes later you return to see that there is still the email sitting in the OUTBOX.    Hmmmm...that's weird, it seems to be going really, really slow; slower than most of the emails you send.

The problem is that today's cameras with their 4+ megapixel sensors create some very large photos.   The same when you scan a photo.  Most people just press the 'SCAN' button with no consideration to what size they want their photo.   Size in this case usually meaning resolution, dpi, and height x width.   All of these have an effect on how big your scan will be.

The Solution:

I present this solution, although it's only one of several available.   I find this one the easiest to explain.

1. Open Picasa 2 .    If you don't have it, you can download it here: http://www.picasa.com

2.  Find the photo you wish to email by sorting through your libraries of folders.

3. Double click on the photo just to make sure it's the one you want to send.

4.Along the bottom of Picasa you'll see a bar of tools.   Click the EMAIL button.

5.  The window above should pop-up.   Now you can choose which email program you wish to use to send the photo.  Personally I recommend Gmail or Picasa Mail, as I've had some interface problems using Outlook.  Click on 'Gmail' and the window below will appear.

(If you don't have a Gmail account let someone know.  You need an 'invite' in order to setup an account but there are plenty of people who have lots of invites.  The Picasa Mail is also easy to setup, and you can use the 'HELLO' username for other things like sharing photos, ordering prints, etc.)

6.  Enter the email address of the recipient, the click on the 'Send' Button.

That's it...that simple.  Picasa will automatically resize the photo to something small enough that even the slowest dialup connection should have no problem sending it.   In this case you can see that it has resized the photo to 23kb, and the Total is 74k which it estimates should take 15 seconds to send or recieve on a 56k modem connection.
