EXIF Lesson Part 2

Keywords:

  1. Click on  Sections and choose KEYWORDS:

  2. Fill in a keyword that describes your photo and click Add.  Continue adding as many descriptive keywords as you wish. These will help when searching for particular photos later.

  3. CLICK on SECTION again and this time choose CATEGORY:

  4. In the Category Window enter a category such as NEWS, SPORTS, etc.  This is a personal preference unless defined by the standards of the wire service to which you are submitting a photo.   Then enter a sub-category under SUPPLEMENTAL.  In this case you can see that I used SPO (for SPORTS) and RODEO as the supplemental category.

  5. Again, Click on the SECTION pulldown menu and this time choose ORIGIN

  6. In the Origin page CLICK on TODAY to automatically enter today's date. Or enter the date the event took place. Note: The actual date and time the photo was taken are already embedded under the EXIF heading later explained later in the lesson:

  7. Fill in the City, State, Country where the photo was taken.

  8. Then give yourself Credit: This is how you would LIKE your photo credit to appear in the newspaper.  It doesn't always work out that way.

  9. Click on and choose the URGENCY in which the photo should be handled.  If you have a shot of the assassination attempt on the President then mark it HIGH; otherwise NORMAL should suffice.

  10. Choose SECTION once again and Click on EXIF.  Notice all the information stored here.  I've included two graphics so you can see just how much information is contained in this file:

And that just about does it.  Click on OK and all your info will be saved to that photo.  Next time you send that photo to a friend, newspaper, webpage, etc, anyone looking at it can see the information included if they have the proper software to read EXIF files.   As a bonus, this is a good way to nab people who might 'borrow' your photos IF they don't know anything about editing EXIF or even remember to look.
