Personalize Google
How to Personalize your Google Homepage and add RSS feeds
The object of this lesson is to show you how to personalize your google homepage, www.google.com/ig and add RSS (really simple syndication) feeds. RSS is a way for your webpage to retrieve info from sources you determine. The purpose is to put all your pertinent info in one place, instead of going to many different pages. (*note: you'll need a gmail account for this tutorial)
Go from this:
To this:
1. Go to http://www.google.com . Look for 'Personalize Home' in the upper right hand corner.
2. Click 'Personalize your Google homepage' near the upper left hand side of the page. A window slides open on the lefthand side. But really, you need to be signed in to 'Save' most of the changes so you should do that first.
Left side window
3.
Start adding components to your webpage by clicking on the 'add' button next to the feature you wish see when you open your Google homepage.
For example: Click on 'add' Stock Market and the following window will appear somewhere on your page. Click 'edit'
Enter your favourite stock symbols and then click 'Add'. Once you've added all your symbols click 'Save'.
To delete symbols click the boxed x next to their respective names.
4. Add Bookmarks in much the same way.
Enter your favourite bookmarks, give them a name, click the 'Add' button. Once you are done, click 'Save'.
5. Add RSS Feeds. Let's say you want to see the latest movies released on DVD each week. Netflix.com happens to 'feed' these as a list using RSS. Go to Netflix, find the URL for their RSS or Syndication and then copy and paste it into your Google homepage using the 'Create a Section' option under the 'Add Content' button.
The feed for Netflix New Releases happens to be http://rss.netflix.com/NewReleasesRSS .
Paste this into the 'Search by topic or feed URL:' and click the 'GO' button. Your new releases will now show up on your google homepage and be updated automatically as new info is changed by Netflix.
Netflix was used as an example. RSS has endless possibilities. Mostly you just have to find a webpage that provided RSS feeds. Many major websites nowadays do so, including the personal blogs of you and your friends.
6. Get Weather for your local city...or the city of far away friends or family.
Find the weather section of your page. Click the 'Edit' link, enter the ZIP code of the city you wish to see, then click 'Add'. Once you've entered all the cities you want, click 'Save'.
7. Add links to recipes:
After you've added Recipes to your page click on the 'Edit' link and determine how many recipes you wish to see by choosing a number between 1 and 9. Click Save.
8. Browse your Gmail:
See a preview of your latest gmails right on your homepage. Notice you can 'Hide Preview'. Just click on Inbox and it will take you to your Gmail page.
9. Remember to sign into your Google account and to now set your search/homepage to http://www.google.com/ig
Your page should now be finished. Add as much or as little to your personalized Google portal as you wish. Have fun with this!
